Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a chronic mental health disorder that can develop after a traumatic event, such as combat, captivity, torture, sexual and/or physical violence, terrorist attacks, natural disasters, etc. Soldiers involved in combat often find themselves in horrific, life-threatening circumstances, seeing their comrades killed, witnessing injuries and death, and feeling helpless in difficult situations.
PTSD is manifested by constant thoughts about the traumatic event. The person tries not to talk about the event or be around people who remind them of it. Panic attacks, chronic pain, headaches, diarrhoea, a feeling of tightness and burning behind the sternum, cramps, and lower back pain are common. This disorder is accompanied by difficulties in everyday life, relationship problems, alcohol, cigarette and drug abuse, and often suicidal thoughts. About 8% of men and 20% of women who have experienced traumatic events have PTSD. If left untreated, it can result in the destruction of relationships, work, health or even life. PTSD can be overcome or managed.
Post-traumatic growth, or PTG, is a psychological change that occurs as a result of a traumatic event and promotes development in all areas of life. People with PTSD rethink their values, start doing what they love, and build relationships with family and friends.
